Figure: Painting the Model in Costume, with a Focus on Portrait
Gabriela Dellosso
Paint or draw the human figure in costume, delving into themes such as historical dress, the use of hats, musical instruments, and other evocative or historically significant props. Develop a fuller understanding of light and shadow, warm and cool colors, sculptural strokes, and simple, expressive shapes while using the painting medium of your choice, including oil, pastel, or watercolor. There will be a focus on creating the portrait; it will teach the student to draw and paint facial features more accurately and 3-dimensionally. The instructor will analyze the structure of the eyes, nose, mouth, cheeks, chin, and ears. We will be using a refined non-toxic, linseed oil in this class as an oil painting medium to achieve the same results as regular toxic painting mediums. We do not allow mineral spirits or toxic mediums like Liquin in the class. Open to all levels.
Drawing: Anatomy & Artistry
Gabriela Dellosso
This class will teach the skills necessary to approach figure drawing. Anatomy will be taught and discussed as a tool to create expressive, interesting figure drawings. Artistry will be emphasized. We will analyze the "magic" of old master drawings. Students will also learn basic shading techniques, expression of line, building solid planes, portrait construction, and a variety of other topics, through lectures and examples. Instructor will demo a figure drawing from reference that will be given to students ahead of time, so students can work alongside the instructor if they so wish to do so. All levels are welcome.
Historical Women Artists: Copy & Lecture Class
Gabriela Dellosso
This class is designed for those interested in learning about women artists throughout history as well as improving their drawing and painting techniques. We will learn about important women artists from the Renaissance to pre 1950. Lectures will discuss their artwork techniques and their life stories. Students will be given a few choices of what works they would like to copy by historical women artists – a variety of works will be offered as choices – in a range of mediums. They will pick one and the instructor will critique the development of the work each week. The technical critiques will teach students fundamentals involving composition. Students will develop a fuller understanding of light and shadow, warm and cool colors, sculptural strokes, and simple, expressive shapes while using the painting medium of their choice, including oil, pastel, or watercolor.
